About the Natwest Bank
The National Westminster Bank, PLC, trading as Natwest on the London Exchange, is a commercial bank and part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. Established in 1968, it formed from the mergers of the National Provincial Bank and the Westminster Bank. It is one of the largest banks in England and Wales, and has an extensive network of branches across the country.
Corporately, the Natwest Bank can trace its roots back to 1650 to the Smiths of Nottingham. After the merger in the 1960s, it began trading on the bourses in 1970. Its three chevron logo is one of the most recognized in the UK. As part of the affiliated banks program, it owns the Coutts and Co. Private Bank, as well as the Ulster Bank of Northern Ireland. After steady expansion and consolidation of services through the 1970s, eventually reaching a peak of 3,500 branches nation wide, the company expanded into stock brokerages and jobbing firms, acquiring several small firms in those fields to create the NatWest Investment Bank. NatWest has also formed a partnership with Bancorp in the United States, and opened branches under that name on the Continent and in India and the Far East. After the stock market crash of 1987 (Black Tuesday), NatWest had to divest itself of several divisions, got out of the investment banking business and sold off its international holdings.
