The Britannia Building Society and Britannia Loans
The Britannia Building Society is the second largest mutual lending society in the UK, and after the demutualization trends of the 1990s, represents the forefront of the remutualization trends of the 21st century, as regulations put in mutual lending societies have reversed the trend of converting building societies into banks for stock market exchange benefits.
The Britannia Building Society traces its history back to the Leek and Moorlands permanent Benefit Building society, founded in 1856. Through a series of mergers and acquisitions, it grew rapidly in the 1960s and 70s, absorbing Westbourne Park in 1965 and Eastern Counties Building Society in 1974. It recently acquired the bank and branch network of Bristol and West, which was the first significant remutualisation of a bank chain in UK history. The Britannia Building Society merger and integration of the Bristol and West assets was completed in July of 2006.
Britannia's roster includes over 3 million members, and they lend nearly £7 billion per annum, on total group assets of £32 billion. The Britannia Building Society also has several subsidiary companies, in residential and commercial lending, even to offshore savings, with the profits from these subsidiary companies distributed to shareholders in the society as a mutualized benefit statement. Britannia's donations to charity are also worth noting, with over £3 million disbursed through their Community Fund and Britannia Building Society Foundation.
Britannia Loans and Britannia Mortgages
The Britannia Building Society maintains one of the lowest rates of arrears and repossessions in the UK, and has in integral credit counseling service as well. Britannia, like most mutual lending societies, uses membership and financial history to make sure Britannia loans and Britannia mortgages are mutually beneficial.
Britannia members are offered a wide range of services, from banking, checking and debit card transactions to Britannia loan products ranging from auto loans, Britannia mortgages, educational loans and personal loans. Britannia personal loans have payment terms of 2 to 7 years on amounts ranging from £1,000 to £25,000, with lower interest rates applied to longer repayment periods.
Britannia also offers its members the usual terms for Britannia mortgages, emphasizing support for first time home buyers, and sells remortgages to qualified homeowners, allowing them to convert equity in their home to cash for home improvements, debt consolidation and other purposes. Remember though, because there is always the risk that a home can be repossessed as part of a remortgage, be sure that you can afford the repayments.
