RAC
RAC plc began its corporate existence as the Royal Automotive Club, competing with the Automotive Association for members around the turn of the 20th century. With services that started out as a fuel purchasing consortium, and eventually expanded to a series of roadside telephones, and eventually a road and automotive rating company, the Royal Automotive Club found that it had diversified into accident and automotive insurance.
By the early twentieth century, the financial services arm and the automotive advocacy organizations were thriving, and in the 1930s, the Clubs services and road side assistance were offered across the entirety of Britain. The Club began sponsoring several events and doing promotional ventures in the 1960s, including sponsoring stock automotive races and team racing sports.
In 1999, after over a century of growth into new areas, the board of directors of The Royal Automotive Club’s motoring services (with the famous bright orange roadside service vans) decided to sell the auto and financial services business to Lex Services, which renamed itself the RAC plc to capitalize on the brand. (The Royal Automotive Club still continues to this day as an advocate for motorists.)
Later, in 2005, RAC plc was bought out by Norwich Union Insurance, which expanded them into home owners and business vehicle insurance.
RAC Loans
RAC plc’s services primarily cover RAC automotive loans and automotive insurance, with the former in the realm of 7% APY. They have recently begun to branch out, offering home owners insurance and RAC remortgages to their customers, and are renowned in the UK financial sector for their innovative bundling of RAC loans and insurance products, tailored to the somewhat eclectic existing consumer base they have.
Interestingly, among British auto insurers, they are the only one with its own windshield factory, directly cutting their costs on repairing and placing damaged windshields.
