The Saffron Building Society is a financial institution specialising in loans, mortgages, savings, investments, and insurance in the UK. Founded in the mid-1800s in Saffron Walden, today the Saffron Building Society is comprised of a network of 12 branches serving the Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and London communities as well as other agencies within the region.
The Saffron Building Society began in 1847. In 1849, the Saffron Walden Second Building Society was established by Rev. John Marten, a minister of Hill Street Baptist Church and manager at a local gas company. By 1857, the company name changed to Saffron Walden Second Benefit Building and Investment Society on the Permanent Plan. Assets reached £37,000 in 1900 and increased to £1million by the year 1959. From 1972 until 1989, the company name went through another series of changes. It was renamed the Saffron Walden and District Building Society in 1972 followed by the Saffron Walden & Essex Building Society in 1979, and then in 1989 it became the Saffron Walden Herts & Essex Building Society with assets standing at £163 million. In 2004, assets reached to £460 million. The company switched names again to its current moniker, Saffron Building Society with assets of £662 million in 2006.
