About the Alliance & Leicester Building Society
The Alliance And Leicester (formerly Girobank), has its roots in the founding of the Leicester Permanent Benefit Society in 1852. Both societies, as was the norm at the time, provided loans to Society members for building homes and office buildings, and starting capital to start up businesses, with the savings of Society members used as the security on the assets. The Leicester Permanent Benefit Society acquired and merged with several other regional societies through to the 1930s, gradually growing and expanding its influence. Notable acquisitions included the Brighton and Sussex Equitable Building Society in 1863.
By the 1920s and 30s, the Alliance Building Society had established a nationwide presence, and a series of mergers continued through the 1950s, eventually culminating in the current corporate organization.
The company was privatised in the 1990s with the changing of the banking laws, and began to diversify its portfolio of lending options, eventually becoming a PLC and full service bank in 1997.
