Egg Banking
Egg Banking started as a division of Prudential in 1996, renaming and relaunching itself in 1998 as the UK’s first purely online bank. Since that time, 21% of the Egg Bank was listed on the London Stock Exchange for three years between 2003 and 2006 before being bought back.
Egg experimented with operating in France from 2002 to 2004, however with the comparatively lower rate of credit card usage in France meant that they were not as profitable, exiting the market in 2004, they sold the division to Netherlands based ING.
Prudential sold Egg to Citigroup in January 2007 for £575 million. When the financial Services Authority approved the sale in May, Egg’s CEO Ian Kerr was appointed head of Egg and Citi UK Consumer.
